Classroom Update - 10.31.2014

Happy Halloween Families!

A big thank you to all of our room helpers that made our Halloween party a “Spook-tacular” event!! The students all had a great time and I so appreciate all of the planning that went into it.  Just a reminder that any extra Halloween candy can be brought to school next week and donated. Thank you!

On Wednesday, November 5th, the PTO is hosting a Fundraising Day at Lou Malnati’s from 11:00 AM- 10:00 PM.

On Friday, November 7th, grades 3, 4, and 5 will be having movie night. It goes from6:00-7:45 PM.

Here are the targets we are either currently  working  on or planning to work on in the next couple of weeks:

Literacy
**We are working on text structures in non-fiction text. The students have been reading different texts and comparing/contrasting the text structures.  Next week they will be working on group projects using different text features wile writing about specific natural disasters.  This will be combining our science and our literacy units very nicely.

Writing
**We are working on writing info/explanatory papers. They first read an article about how islands are formed. Then, they planned and wrote an info/explanatory paper using text evidence from the article. We are concentrating on good sentence structure.

Math
**We are continuing our work with multiplying decimals. The students have been introduced many strategies to use to do this. Next week, we will be working on dividing decimals.

Science
**We are finishing up our weather unit.

Social Studies
**We are finishing up our freedoms/ liberties unit and are moving on to finding the meaning of our pledge.

Upcoming Events
**NO SCHOOL - Tuesday, November 4th

Friendly Reminders
**Please remember to send your child with a healthy snack.  Nothing feeds the brain like a healthy snack!  Also, because allergies, please make sure your child's snack complies with our district's safe snack list.

**Please continue to have your child practice their multiplication facts up to 12.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Thank you for your continued support and have a happy and safe Halloween!

Classroom Update - 10.17.2014

Good Afternoon Families!

Can you believe that it is almost time for Halloween! I know the teachers are having fun planning their Halloween costumes. I’m sure your children are getting excited for their last Halloween parade at Ivy Hall. Please remember, as you are planning your costumes, that students are asked to wear safe costumes and not to wear masks.

Here are the targets we are currently / planning on working to master over the next couple of weeks:

Literacy
* We are working on quoting accurately when making inferences from a NON-FICTION text.
* Please remind your student(s) to work on their personal reading at home and complete the inference pages while reading at home.

Writing
* We are working on writing informative papers. This week we looked at preparing engaging leads and topic sentences.

Math:
We are sending the Unit One Math Tests home on Friday. Please look over them and, if possible, review with your student(s). Please sign and return the tests so that we can put them in their binders. The students have had the opportunity to re-do any math targets that were not mastered. We will work on any targets that need continued work.
