Classroom Update - 1.30.2015

Happy Friday Families!

It seems like this year is moving too quickly with Valentine's Day just around the corner!  We know that their last classroom party at Ivy Hall will be one to remember!

As we move through the winter months, our students are hard at work!  Here are the targets we are currently / planning on working to master over the next couple of weeks:

Literacy
* We are starting a new literature unit. We will analyze an author's point of view to determine how a story is told. We will also revisit how to make inferences when reading a text.
* Please remind your child that the monthly comprehension strategy practice attached to the reading log is due this Monday, February 2nd.

Writing
* We have revisited narrative writing, currently focusing on incorporating the writer's voice throughout students' essays.

Math
We are continuing our work with fractions in Unit 4. The students have worked hard to interpret multiplication as scaling through words or pictures, explaining how the size of the product of fractional numbers is based on the size of each factor without performing the indicated multiplication.

Social Studies
* We are currently working on the explorer projects.  Students are learning valuable research skills as they work hard to pull information from various resources.

Science
* We are currently moving through the digestive system and learning how to take outlined notes.

Upcoming Events
** NO SCHOOL - President's Day
      - Monday, February 16th

Friendly Reminders
** Please remember to send your child with a healthy snack.  Nothing feeds the brain like a healthy snack!  Also, because allergies, please make sure your child's snack complies with our district's safe snack list.

** Please continue to have your child practice their multiplication facts up to 12.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  Thank you and have a fantastic weekend!

Classroom Update - 1.16.2015

Dear Parents,

All of the students’ hard work paid off and we were all able to enjoy a great 5th grade music program! Way to go!! We also had a very successful Trade Fair on Thursday. The products the students brought in were very creative. They gained first hand experience with trading their goods for other goods. It was a success! Here is what’s happening in our classrooms:

Math- We are continuing our work with fractions. The students will interpret multiplication as scaling through words or pictures, explaining how the size of the product of fractional numbers is based on the size of each factor without performing the indicated multiplication.

Literacy- We are starting a new literature unit. We will begin this by comparing and contrasting two or more characters including how they react to events in the story. We will also be revisiting narrative writing.

Science- We are beginning to talk about the human body and the digestive system.

Social Studies- We will be wrapping up our economy unit and moving into our Explorer Unit.

**Please look for the winter MAP scores in your child’s backpack today. Also, just a reminder that there is no school on Monday, January 19th for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Have a wonderful extended weekend!
