Classroom Update - 12.19.2014

Happy Holidays to all. May your New Year be filled with PEACE, JOY, and LOVE!

Good Afternoon Families!

Below are the targets we will be working on into the second grading period:

Literacy
**We will continue to work on using context clues to find the meaning of unfamiliar words.  

Writing
**We will continue to  practice opinion/argumentative writing.  Students will be asked to pick a stance and defend their argument using evidence from the text, as well as their own ideas.
Spelling: We will begin a new spelling unit in January. Our grade was chosen to try a new spelling curriculum, that we are all excited about. The district will be sending a letter home to you that will explain in more detail.

Math
**We will begin Unit 4, which covers multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers and applying those concepts when presented with real world word problems.

Science
**We completed our cell unit and will be now exploring the Human Body Unit , where we focus on the bodys systems.

Social Studies
**We will start our discussion on economy, with a focus on goods vs. services, supply and demand, and trade.  Please be on the lookout for information regarding our 5th grade trade fair! We will send out trade fair information the first week we return. Students should be starting to think about what kind of product they will make for the trade fair


Friendly Reminders
**Please remember to send your child with a healthy snack.  Nothing feeds the brain like a healthy snack!  Also, because allergies, please make sure your child's snack complies with our district's safe snack list.

**Please continue to have your child practice their multiplication facts up to 12.

**Please remember to return all tests and CFA's that are attached to Friday Updates, as I keep those in their binders to review at conference time.

Classroom Update - 12.05.2014

Happy Friday Families!

It was great to see you all during conferences.  I truly enjoyed the opportunity to share your child's growth in fifth grade.  Thank you for your continued support in your child's education.  I hope your Thanksgiving holiday break was fantastic and I hope you enjoyed good food and special time bonding with family and friends.  The field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry was a perfect culminating activity for our students' weather unit.  They enjoyed the hands-on exhibits and learning outside of the classroom!


**MAP Testing Information
We are taking the winter MAP reading and math tests next week.  Below is our MAP testing schedule:
- Monday: Reading
- Tuesday: Math
Please make sure to get a good night's sleep and to have a healthy breakfast!

**We are continuing to work on analyzing multiple accounts, while considering characters' points of view and their perspective.  


Writing

**We will continue to practice concepts from Unit 3, which covers adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers and applying those concepts when presented with real world word problems.

Classroom Update - 11.14.2014

Good Afternoon Families!

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner!  However, with the weather outside, it feels more like the middle of winter!  In such a short time, our 5th graders have learned so much because of their hard work and the continued support you give them at home.  Please make sure to read the following information regarding report cards:

Report Card Information:  
First Trimester Report Cards will be released on November 21st at 3:00pm.
Your child's report card will be online this year.  You will still receive an envelope, which you must return signed acknowledging that you have viewed the online report card and any included documents.  Information to set up your online PowerSchool account to access your child's report card will be included in the envelope coming home on Friday, November 21st.

Classroom Update - 10.31.2014

Happy Halloween Families!

A big thank you to all of our room helpers that made our Halloween party a “Spook-tacular” event!! The students all had a great time and I so appreciate all of the planning that went into it.  Just a reminder that any extra Halloween candy can be brought to school next week and donated. Thank you!

On Wednesday, November 5th, the PTO is hosting a Fundraising Day at Lou Malnati’s from 11:00 AM- 10:00 PM.

On Friday, November 7th, grades 3, 4, and 5 will be having movie night. It goes from6:00-7:45 PM.

Here are the targets we are either currently  working  on or planning to work on in the next couple of weeks:

Literacy
**We are working on text structures in non-fiction text. The students have been reading different texts and comparing/contrasting the text structures.  Next week they will be working on group projects using different text features wile writing about specific natural disasters.  This will be combining our science and our literacy units very nicely.


Writing
**We are working on writing info/explanatory papers. They first read an article about how islands are formed. Then, they planned and wrote an info/explanatory paper using text evidence from the article. We are concentrating on good sentence structure.


Math
**We are continuing our work with multiplying decimals. The students have been introduced many strategies to use to do this. Next week, we will be working on dividing decimals.


Science
**We are finishing up our weather unit.


Social Studies
**We are finishing up our freedoms/ liberties unit and are moving on to finding the meaning of our pledge.

Classroom Update - 10.17.2014

Good Afternoon Families!

Can you believe that it is almost time for Halloween! I know the teachers are having fun planning their Halloween costumes. I’m sure your children are getting excited for their last Halloween parade at Ivy Hall. Please remember, as you are planning your costumes, that students are asked to wear safe costumes and not to wear masks.


Here are the targets we are currently / planning on working to master over the next couple of weeks:



Literacy
* We are working on quoting accurately when making inferences from a NON-FICTION text.
* Please remind your student(s) to work on their personal reading at home and complete the inference pages while reading at home.



Writing
* We are working on writing informative papers. This week we looked at preparing engaging leads and topic sentences.



Math:
We are sending the Unit One Math Tests home on Friday. Please look over them and, if possible, review with your student(s). Please sign and return the tests so that we can put them in their binders. The students have had the opportunity to re-do any math targets that were not mastered. We will work on any targets that need continued work.

* We have started Unit 2 and the Parent letter will be going home with the Friday Updates this week.

The targets we worked on this week are:
5.NBT.3: Write and compare decimals to the thousandths place value.
5.NBT.4: Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place.
5.NBT.2: Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use positive integer exponents to denote powers of 10.

Future Targets in the next few weeks:
- 5.NBT.7.1: Add and subtract decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; explain the strategy used.
- 5.NBT.7.2: Multiply and divide decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division; explain the strategy used.

Classroom Update - 9.26.2014

Happy Friday Families!

We are officially into Fall and believe it or not, wrapping up our first cycle of fifth grade!  Thank you for the continued support you give your child at home.   

Here are the targets we are currently / planning on working to master over the next couple of weeks:


Literacy
* Our test is on the following targets:

  1. Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic.
  2. Summarize a text (story, poem, or drama).
* Our next target is quoting accurately when making inferences from a NON-FICTION text.


Writing
* We are wrapping up our Narrative unit. Our students have been writing great stories with strong beginnings and endings. They did a phenomenal job on SHOWING, not telling, with word choice and using figurative language! We will start Informative writing in a few weeks!


Math
They will have the division portion of the Unit 1 practice test (#'s 7 and 8) to complete over the weekend to prepare for the test.
Please continue to encourage your child to utilize the math visuals link posted on our site to help them through the practice test.  There are also a few links below your child can use while practicing the last target of Unit 1.

* We are wrapping up Unit 1. Our test is broken up into two days:

  1. Thursday (Place value, multiplication, and division) 
  2. Friday (Order of operations and writing expressions)

Social Studies
* Explain why liberty is an important right.
* Explain the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Classroom Update - 9.12.2014

Happy Friday Families!

We've settled into our classroom routines and are currently wrapping up targets in literacy and math.  Needless to say, our students have been hard at work!

Here are the targets we are currently / planning on working to master over the next couple of weeks:

Literacy
* Summarize a text (story, poem, or drama).

Writing
* Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters.
* Organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally.

Math
* Find whole-number quotients with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division.  Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. 

Social Studies
* Locate, on a map, the major river systems of the world.
* Describe the location of countries relative to the locations of other countries. 

Science
* Weather

Good Afternoon Families!
