Classroom Update - 12.05.2014

Happy Friday Families!

It was great to see you all during conferences.  I truly enjoyed the opportunity to share your child's growth in fifth grade.  Thank you for your continued support in your child's education.  I hope your Thanksgiving holiday break was fantastic and I hope you enjoyed good food and special time bonding with family and friends.  The field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry was a perfect culminating activity for our students' weather unit.  They enjoyed the hands-on exhibits and learning outside of the classroom!

**MAP Testing Information
We are taking the winter MAP reading and math tests next week.  Below is our MAP testing schedule:
- Monday: Reading
- Tuesday: Math
Please make sure to get a good night's sleep and to have a healthy breakfast!

Below are the targets we are either currently  working  on or planning to work on as we move into the second grading period:

Literacy
**We are continuing to work on analyzing multiple accounts, while considering characters' points of view and their perspective.

Writing
**We are writing opinion/argumentative writing.  Students will be asked to pick a stance and defend their argument using evidence from the text, as well as their own ideas.

Math
**We will continue to practice concepts from Unit 3, which covers adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers and applying those concepts when presented with real world word problems.

Science
**We will begin our Human Body unit, starting with cells and their purpose.

Social Studies
**We will start our discussion on economy, with a focus on goods vs. services, supply and demand, and trade.  Please be on the lookout for information regarding our 5th grade trade fair!

Friendly Reminders
**Please remember to send your child with a healthy snack.  Nothing feeds the brain like a healthy snack!  Also, because of allergies, please make sure your child's snack complies with our district's safe snack list.

**Please continue to have your child practice their multiplication facts up to 12.
