Classroom Update - 9.26.2014

Happy Friday Families!

We are officially into Fall and believe it or not, wrapping up our first cycle of fifth grade!  Thank you for the continued support you give your child at home.

Here are the targets we are currently / planning on working to master over the next couple of weeks:

Literacy
* Our test is on the following targets:

  1. Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic.
  2. Summarize a text (story, poem, or drama).
* Our next target is quoting accurately when making inferences from a NON-FICTION text.

Writing
* We are wrapping up our Narrative unit. Our students have been writing great stories with strong beginnings and endings. They did a phenomenal job on SHOWING, not telling, with word choice and using figurative language! We will start Informative writing in a few weeks!

Math
They will have the division portion of the Unit 1 practice test (#'s 7 and 8) to complete over the weekend to prepare for the test.
Please continue to encourage your child to utilize the math visuals link posted on our site to help them through the practice test.  There are also a few links below your child can use while practicing the last target of Unit 1.

* We are wrapping up Unit 1. Our test is broken up into two days:

  1. Thursday (Place value, multiplication, and division)
  2. Friday (Order of operations and writing expressions)
Games / Websites for the last target of Unit 1 (Writing Expressions - OA.2)

Social Studies
* Explain why liberty is an important right.
* Explain the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Science
* Weather Unit
