Classroom Update - 10.17.2014

Good Afternoon Families!

Can you believe that it is almost time for Halloween! I know the teachers are having fun planning their Halloween costumes. I’m sure your children are getting excited for their last Halloween parade at Ivy Hall. Please remember, as you are planning your costumes, that students are asked to wear safe costumes and not to wear masks.

Here are the targets we are currently / planning on working to master over the next couple of weeks:

Literacy
* We are working on quoting accurately when making inferences from a NON-FICTION text.
* Please remind your student(s) to work on their personal reading at home and complete the inference pages while reading at home.

Writing
* We are working on writing informative papers. This week we looked at preparing engaging leads and topic sentences.

Math:
We are sending the Unit One Math Tests home on Friday. Please look over them and, if possible, review with your student(s). Please sign and return the tests so that we can put them in their binders. The students have had the opportunity to re-do any math targets that were not mastered. We will work on any targets that need continued work.

* We have started Unit 2 and the Parent letter will be going home with the Friday Updates this week.

The targets we worked on this week are:
5.NBT.3: Write and compare decimals to the thousandths place value.
5.NBT.4: Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place.

Future Targets in the next few weeks:
- 5.NBT.7.1: Add and subtract decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; explain the strategy used.
