Happy Friday Families!
It is hard to believe that we have officially entered our final trimester and spring break is only a week away! Through creating their collaborative conference slideshows, the students had the opportunity to reflect upon their 5th grade year so far. They are looking forward to sharing all about their growth and progress during spring conferences next week!

Literacy
Our current shared text, Real-Life Superheroes, highlights specific individuals who significantly and positively impacted society. Featured superheroes included Richard Martin, Thomas Barnardo, and Raoul Wallenberg. These individuals earned the title of "real-life superheroes" due to their immense amount of bravery, compassion, and selflessness. We integrated other sources, such as articles and books, to gather and organize additional information. Next week, we will be reading about Rosa Parks and her importance during the Civil Rights Movement.
Writing
To sharpen our analytical writing skills and dive deeper into the topic of our shared text, students will be preparing and recording oral presentations about real-life superheroes. In the planning process, students gathered information from multiple sources about their superhero's biography and legacy. They also utilized index cards to outline the contents of their presentation. In the upcoming week, the students will use their gained knowledge, creativity, and FlipGrid to film a video about their chosen real-life superhero. The twist is that the students will be speaking as if they are the real-life superhero!
Math
We have recently started Unit 6, which will incorporate skills in the area of geometry. This week, we learned about locating and labeling ordered pairs on a coordinate plane and investigating patterns within a series. We will continue our unit on geometry by exploring the hierarchy of polygons, which includes triangles and quadrilaterals. Using academic language related to angles and sides, students will classify shapes based on attributes.
Science
Our new unit features the three states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). We compared the particles within the states of matter based on space and movement. We also discussed that even though matter may change states, matter is neither lost or created. We will continue to investigate the properties of matter in our upcoming investigation. Using balloons, students will analyze that all matter takes up space and has weight.
